There’s no way of knowing who will live and who will die.\u00a0 But, for sure, some aren’t going to make it.<\/p>\n

That’s the kind of Halloween we’re having this Friday.<\/p>\n

Apparently Mother Nature decided to dress up as Jack Frost.\u00a0 By the time the goblins go to bed and the sun comes up on Saturday morning, temperatures should be in the 30’s.<\/p>\n

Which means it’s the end of the line for some of the veggies in the garden.\u00a0 But which ones will survive is up for grabs.\u00a0 Sometimes the neighbors will get a hard frost on their lawn and we’ll still have only dew in the garden.\u00a0 Sometimes the trees on our property do a lot to block the worst of the weather for the first 2 rows of the garden, but sometimes it’s not enough.\u00a0 A strong wind that night may prevent frost from sticking.\u00a0 Or the wind may blow away whatever we use to try and cover the plants, leaving them fully exposed.\u00a0 The meteorologist may be completely wrong and the kids will be sweating in their costumes.\u00a0 Really, who knows?<\/p>\n

It all reminds me of that adorable sloth, Belt, in the movie The Croods<\/a>.\u00a0 Faced with upcoming disaster, destruction, and even death, he lets out an excited, barely scared, mostly cheerful “Duh duh duuuuh!”<\/a><\/p>\n

Seems like an endearing and entirely appropriate way to face the end.\u00a0 Certainly better than all that weeping and gnashing of teeth.<\/p>\n

Oh, the banana peppers (and their ladybug friend) will be unpleasantly surprised.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The nasturtium that just sent up a flush of glossy new leaves and was about to bloom is probably a goner.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The green beans may finally give up after a long and prolific season.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The potatoes will shrivel up and the spuds need to be harvested.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

These green tomatoes are certainly headed for the skillet and a yummy corn meal coating.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the rest of the garden—-beets, spinach, lettuce, chard, kale, broccoli, bok choy, brussels sprouts, onions—- is dressed for the holiday.\u00a0 That’s right, people, it’s Halloween.<\/p>\n

And the fall garden is going as a ghost.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Boo, y’all.<\/p>\n
