{"id":12362,"date":"2015-06-10T04:45:40","date_gmt":"2015-06-10T11:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/?p=12362"},"modified":"2015-07-20T06:53:00","modified_gmt":"2015-07-20T13:53:00","slug":"you-need-some-of-these","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/?p=12362","title":{"rendered":"You Need Some Of These."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Onion rings get a bad rap.\u00a0 Something about fat, grease, blah, blah, blah.\u00a0 I think that&#8217;s forgetting the important fact that onions are vegetables, people, <em>vegetables<\/em>.\u00a0 Regardless, once you&#8217;ve received a large pallet of free onions for the pigs, there&#8217;s nothing to do except make onion rings.\u00a0 Pigs don&#8217;t really eat onions.\u00a0 Neither do goats, sheep, chickens, or ducks.\u00a0 Not even the fat pony.<\/p>\n<p>Now before you get all excited about that<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"> fatty<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">greasy<\/span> vegetable goodness, realize that onion rings take a lot of work.\u00a0 There&#8217;s batter to mix.\u00a0 Plus a separate bowl of flour for dipping.\u00a0 And pot of oil to heat, which only hold 4 or 5 onion rings at a time.\u00a0 Never mind all that turning of the onions rings.\u00a0 And waiting for each side to finish.\u00a0 Before putting 4 or 5 more in the pan.\u00a0 Consider that you have 6 people to feed (that&#8217;s a lot of onion rings) and that&#8217;s a lot of steps.\u00a0 And a lot of waiting.\u00a0 Too much work, right?<\/p>\n<p>Wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Because while you&#8217;re waiting for each ring to develop to <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">fatty<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">greasy<\/span> crunchy vegetable perfection, you can accomplish an entire To Do list without breaking a sweat.\u00a0 Now I realize the brain scientists have proven there is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=95256794\" target=\"_blank\">no such thing as multitasking<\/a>.\u00a0 Apparently your brain is simply quickly switching activities, not really handling more than one at a time.\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 Fine.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t mention that while the brain scientists were busy at work proving there&#8217;s no such thing as multitasking, their spouses were at home vacuuming up the toddler&#8217;s cheerios while rocking a colicky baby under their arm while using their foot to wipe up dog vomit with a paper towel.\u00a0 Oh, wait.\u00a0 I did mention it.\u00a0 Whoops.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to all that research, the proper scientific term now for &#8220;getting a lot of sh*t done at once&#8221; is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/k12edubuzz.com\/multitasking-or-serial-tasking\/\" target=\"_blank\"> serial tasking.<\/a> Which makes it sound like you&#8217;re going after the To Do list with an axe and this face:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AWKQSDRekBM\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"irc_mi\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The Shinig.  Jack Nicholsan\" src=\"http:\/\/images.rapgenius.com\/7a070a2228934a684bc0c5773f2db186.400x593x1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Regardless, onion rings are all about serial tasking.\u00a0 Once the rings were cut and waiting on the counter for their turn to be dipped and fried, I had time to make the dinner salad.\u00a0 Please note that meant a double serving of vegetables for my family.\u00a0 Double, people.<\/p>\n<p>After turning the first batch and waiting for the other side to brown, I had time to grill the bratwurst.<\/p>\n<p>Started the next batch and then I deboned the chicken that was in the fridge.<\/p>\n<p>Flipped those rings over, washed and dried all the dishes from dinner prep.<\/p>\n<p>Started 5 more onion rings, cleaned out the veggie and fruit drawers in the fridge by putting anything squishy in the chicken scraps and putting fresh paper towels down as liners.<\/p>\n<p>Flipped the onion rings over, removed all the pots and pans containing leftover food from the farm fridge, transferred their contents into appropriate Tupperware.<\/p>\n<p>Started another batch of rings, washed and dried all those pots and pans and put them away.<\/p>\n<p>Flipped them, switched the load of laundry from washer to dryer and started a fresh load.<\/p>\n<p>New batch, folded clean laundry and carried it upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Flipped them, wiped all the eggs.<\/p>\n<p>New batch, put the eggs into cartons.<\/p>\n<p>Flipped them, went onto the deck and fed and watered the bunny.<\/p>\n<p>New batch, watered flowers on deck and sprayed off the mess under bunny&#8217;s cage.<\/p>\n<p>Flipped them, sat on the floor and stretched out my back from weeding in the garden earlier.<\/p>\n<p>New batch, went through all the papers on the counter by putting aside report cards for The Other Half, hiding bills in the office where I can ignore them, put junk mail into recycling, and cut everything else into quarters to use as scrap paper for To Do lists.<\/p>\n<p>Flipped them, told the kids to come downstairs and set the table.\u00a0 Because, really, do I have to do everything????<\/p>\n<p>By the time we sat down to eat, the fridge was clean, the downstairs was picked up, the laundry was done, and the evening farm chores were already started.\u00a0 All thanks to onion rings.\u00a0 So onion rings are actually very, very good for you.\u00a0 Plus, they&#8217;re vegetables.
