Days."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is how we are, people.\u00a0 It&#8217;s true.\u00a0 We want, but we don&#8217;t appreciate.\u00a0 We waste, and then act surprised when it&#8217;s gone. \u00a0 The first squash of the season was a delectable thrill.\u00a0 The blinding yellow of the crookneck and sunburst, the pure white scallop, the endless shades of green and grey.\u00a0 The first taste of summer&#8217;s upcoming bounty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/squash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12550\" title=\"squash\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/squash-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/squash-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/squash-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We started with saut\u00e9s and then moved into our tried and true favorites&#8212;grilled and drizzled with olive oil, roasted with butter and garlic, zucchini bread, squash casserole, fritters.\u00a0 We fought valiantly with squash bugs and picked early and often to ensure a prolific crop.\u00a0 When the harvest was sufficiently established, we began to share with friends and family.\u00a0 When it was abundant, we carried the extra to neighbors and co-workers.\u00a0 When it became overwhelming, no one was allowed to leave the property without an armload of squash.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually we were simply picking squash for the goats, pigs, and chickens.\u00a0 Because no one else would eat it.\u00a0 We stopped spraying for pests and considered the plants to be a trap crop&#8212;-keeping squash bugs safely away from the rest of the burgeoning garden produce.\u00a0 When the plants withered and died in the middle of July it was like a reprieve.<\/p>\n<p>Until it wasn&#8217;t.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Eggplants and peppers and, of course, tomatoes were pouring in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/veggies.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12552\" title=\"veggies\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/veggies-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/veggies-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/veggies-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were three types of beans, two varieties of tomatillos, and okra pods that grew inches overnight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/okra.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12553\" title=\"okra\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/okra-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/okra-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/okra-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Everything was bold and crisp, juicy and flavorful. \u00a0 The mild and tender taste of squash, unassuming and adaptable, was lost in the vibrant heat of summer.\u00a0 So I did what anyone who enjoys the advantage of a long growing season would do.\u00a0 I started again.\u00a0 I turned over the row, buried some seeds, and, without even adding any compost to the dried out soil, voil\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/squash1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12555\" title=\"squash\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/squash1-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/squash1-199x300.jpg 199w, sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 45 days, the squash plants were back in business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2039.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12557\" unstoppable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pic-n-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12558\" title=\"pic-n-pic\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/pic-n-pic-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" ahead of me, some of the larger ones would have to be given to my English co-worker as marrow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12559\" title=\"DSCN2024\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2024-e1441573670821-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2024-e1441573670821-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN2024-e1441573670821-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But I was determined not to complain and not to take it for granted.\u00a0 I branched out into <a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/recipe\/238370\/yellow-squash-and-corn-saute\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yellow Squash and Corn Saute<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/diethood.com\/garlic-parmesan-yellow-squash-chips\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garlic Parmesan Yellow Squash Chips<\/a>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onceuponachef.com\/2014\/07\/creamed-zucchini-garlic-basil.html\" target=\"_blank\">Creamed Zucchini with Garlic and Basil<\/a> got bonus points for using up some of the basil in the herb bed.
