Back Thursday:  Wedding Blues."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Most of my writing-time was replaced with kid-time over the summer.\u00a0 Also, weeding-the-garden-time.\u00a0 And the always enjoyable mowing-the-yard-again-time.\u00a0 But I did take some pictures and I did have some thoughts.\u00a0 They were random thoughts then and are mostly irrelevant thoughts now, but isn&#8217;t the entire point of a blog to force other people to read your random, irrelevant thoughts??\u00a0 Suckers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Assume this random irrelevant-ness happened sometime over the summer.\u00a0 And I just didn&#8217;t have time to write about it while doing otherwise important tasks like screaming at the kids to feed the dogs, empty the dishwasher, and go the heck outside already. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wedding Blues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While checking the fence line for breaks, I discovered a profusion of wildflowers tangled in and around the chicken wire.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t surprised that they were flourishing in a spot where the lawn mower and the ruminants couldn&#8217;t reach them.\u00a0 But it did seem noteworthy that so many of them were shades of blue and purple.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, there were these guys, of course.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yellow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12600\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yellow-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" were flourishing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/bachelor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12606\" title=\"bachelor button\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/bachelor-e1441882907712.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was as if the weeds themselves were prepared for wedding season, hoping to be snatched up for a homemade bridesmaid bouquet or table centerpiece.\u00a0 And the wildflower varieties were perfectly suited to fulfill the traditional bridal rhyme:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Something old,<br \/>\nsomething new,<br \/>\nsomething borrowed,<br \/>\nsomething blue,<br \/>\nand a silver sixpence in her shoe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Self-heal (Heal All, Prunella) was probably the oldest plant in the mix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN1866.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12609\" title=\"self heal\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN1866-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN1866-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN1866-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The herb has an ancient history of being used for wound healing and headaches, but, as the name implies, the plant was also used for an endless array of ailments where it was found in Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdidea.com\/products\/new\/new03905.html\" target=\"_blank\">one source<\/a>, those of us in the southern U.S. even used it as &#8220;a spinach substitute, prepared in a big pot with a piece of hog meat.&#8221;\u00a0 Because down here, anything that is green obviously counts as &#8220;greens&#8221; and is, therefore, an edible vegetable.\u00a0 And all vegetables should be sauteed in hog fat.\u00a0 Otherwise, what&#8217;s the point?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The newest weed had to be the butterfly pea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN1659.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12610\" title=\"butterfly pea\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN1659-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN1659-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSCN1659-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Oh, the weed isn&#8217;t a new to everyone, but this was the first summer that it appeared on my property.\u00a0 The Latin name for the plant is <em>clitoria ternatea <\/em>because botanists thought it resembled a certain part of female anatomy.\u00a0 I can picture a group of male scientists, standing in a field, scrutinizing the delicate flower while considering names saying,\u00a0 &#8220;It looks so familiar, but I <em>can&#8217;t quite put my finger on it<\/em>&#8230;.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8216;Cause men have that problem some times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The borrowed plant was this intricate purple stunner, Asiatic dayflower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/asiatic-daylily.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12612\" title=\"asiatic dayflower\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/asiatic-daylily-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/asiatic-daylily-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/asiatic-daylily-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Maybe.\u00a0 Asiatic dayflowers were introduced from East Asia and Southeast Asia and have become an invasive weed in some areas.\u00a0 The problem is that the Asiatic dayflower is similar to the native Slender dayflower, which isn&#8217;t borrowed at all.\u00a0 I&#8217;m fairly sure the translucent white petal at the base of the blue petals makes my plant an Asiatic dayflower.\u00a0 There are some other determining characteristics between the plants including fused spathes, node rootlets, and leaf margins.\u00a0 Which no one understands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Regardless, the Asiatic dayflower played an important role in some interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amjbot.org\/content\/96\/7\/1236.full\" target=\"_blank\">pollination studies.<\/a> Turns out those dramatic yellow anthers and striking white styles are primarily for attracting pollinators and tricking them into pollinating the plant, despite its lack of nectar.\u00a0 Altering the anthers or styles <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commelina_communis\" target=\"_blank\">can decrease total amount of pollinators visiting the plant or result in pollen theft, where the visitor takes pollen but doesn&#8217;t place any on the stigma in return<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Similar studies weren&#8217;t done with the American native, Slender dayflower.\u00a0 So there&#8217;s no real evidence that the Asian dayflowers are smarter than the American dayflowers.\u00a0 But, you know, we can probably assume their SAT scores are higher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite the fact that most of the wildflowers I found were blue or bluish, the blue one I&#8217;d choose for my wedding rhyme would have to be the morning glory.\u00a0 Simple yet stunning.\u00a0 Common but ethereal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/morning-glory-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12614\" title=\"morning glory \" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/morning-glory-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/morning-glory-2-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/morning-glory-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>There every morning when you wake up, just like that lump under the covers beside you in the marital bed, slapping at the snooze button on the alarm clock.\u00a0 And like any good marriage, the morning glory isn&#8217;t just around for the good times&#8212;&#8211;the sunny beginnings, the promise of a new day.\u00a0 Instead, the morning glory sneaks back into bloom whenever the bright afternoon sunshine fades.\u00a0 An overcast day or a bit of drizzle or an impending storm cloud sliding over the sun and the morning glory bursts open again.\u00a0 Still here, it calls triumphantly.\u00a0 Got bright <strong>and<\/strong> dreary covered, people.\u00a0 For better or for worse.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t find anything silver.\u00a0 But I did find an incredibly shiny dewdrop while I was photographing the morning glory.\u00a0 A shiny<em> moving <\/em>dewdrop.\u00a0 That wasn&#8217;t actually a dewdrop at all but a little golden beetle.\u00a0 The edges of its shell were transparent and its bright gold shell winked in the sun, making it only appear to be a dewdrop sliding around the leaf of the morning glory.\u00a0 It was a golden tortoise beetle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gold-bug-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12618\" title=\"gold bug \" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gold-bug-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gold-bug-2-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gold-bug-2-1023x683.jpg 1023w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/gold-bug-2.jpg 1894w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the photo off <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_tortoise_beetle\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>, you see how the transparent edge makes it look like it&#8217;s floating in water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/5\/57\/Golden_Tortoise_Beetle_-_Charidotella_sexpunctata.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Tortoise Beetle - Charidotella sexpunctata.jpg\" width=\"337\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The beetles are a common species and morning glory plants are one of their favorite snacks. \u00a0 Although in all my years of planting morning glories on trellises and in plant boxes and stopping to admire their wild scrawl across fences and pastureland,\u00a0 I&#8217;d never ever noticed one of the minuscule bugs.\u00a0 Maybe they&#8217;d avoided my attention in the past by turning drab with their <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/running-ponies\/glad-you-ditched-the-anal-fork-golden-tortoise-beetle\/\" target=\"_blank\">unique color changing ability.<\/a> Or by hiding themselves under their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/06\/absurd-creature-of-the-week-tortoise-beetle\/\" target=\"_blank\">anal fork<\/a>.\u00a0 Which is a real thing.\u00a0 Because truth is way grosser than fiction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/DSCN1430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"348\" height=\"244\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But I finally saw a golden tortoise beetle that morning while I was working on the fence line.\u00a0 There it was, a gold bug as glittering and striking as the gold band that has its own place in the marriage tradition.\u00a0 Even though it actually does come in silver, too.\u00a0 Perfect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cowyeow\/5444621955\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5257\/5444621955_6e47c6768d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Funny how that beetle showed up just while I was casually strolling the fence line on a summer day.\u00a0 Noticing the wildflowers.\u00a0 Which reminded me of the wedding rhyme.\u00a0 And then summoned the bug that rolled it all together into a blog post.\u00a0 Life is magic like that, people.\u00a0 Amazing, inexplicable, poop-wielding magic.\u00a0 Which is probably the most powerful
