{"id":334,"date":"2010-01-09T17:29:43","date_gmt":"2010-01-10T00:29:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/?p=334"},"modified":"2010-03-13T19:48:52","modified_gmt":"2010-03-14T02:48:52","slug":"a-tale-of-two-roosters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/?p=334","title":{"rendered":"A Tale of Two Roosters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/104_104.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-615\" title=\"Snowman\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/104_104-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/104_104-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/104_104-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>What a drag.\u00a0 Sometime while we were running our errands, our rooster, Snowman,\u00a0 ventured over the six foot privacy fence and into the backyard with the dogs.\u00a0 Suffice to say he never made it out again.\u00a0 When I first saw the feathers scattered over the playground, I assumed it was another crazy hen who had given her life in a attempt to find\u00a0 safe place to lay her eggs.\u00a0 I mean, even risking the dogs&#8217; wrath is better than having to use those private, comfortable, clean, and shavings-filled nest boxes attached to the coop.<\/p>\n<p>However, Little quickly pointed out that it was Snowman whose ventures had ended in disaster.\u00a0 &#8220;Look&#8221;, he said, pulling the severed head out from under<!--more--> the slide.\u00a0 &#8220;It was Snowman.&#8221;\u00a0 What a shame.\u00a0 He was a good rooster&#8212;a solid leader of the hens, confident enough to control extra males without brutalizing them, and\u00a0 disinclined to attack even the shortest child or a farmer bent over the feed cans in a most defenseless manner.\u00a0 Little closed Snowman&#8217;s unblinking eyes with his hand and asked if we should bury him or just toss his remains <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">over the neighbor&#8217;s fence<\/span> into the woods.\u00a0 Farm kids are just the right mix of respectable and practical about death, aren&#8217;t they?<\/p>\n<p>We settled on the pile of old Christmas trees along the property line for his final resting place.\u00a0 When the older kids got off the school bus, I handed them bags and asked them to get up the loose feathers in the backyard before coming in for snack.\u00a0 They sighed and got to work.\u00a0 Sometimes I wonder what the city kids do after school.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty noted that it was sad to lose Snowman but now Romeo would get a chance to be in charge.\u00a0 That&#8217;s true.\u00a0 Romeo is the back-up rooster and has spent the last year cowering under Snowman&#8217;s command while sneaking quickies with\u00a0 the most licentious hens behind the woodpile.\u00a0 Of course, taking charge of the flock is kind of like moving up in the Mafia.\u00a0 Great benefits, but you&#8217;ll be the first one to take the hit.\u00a0 So, good bye, Snowman.\u00a0 Rest in Peace.\u00a0 And good luck, Romeo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/romeo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-481\" title=\"Romeo\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/romeo-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 0.79in } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.08in } \t\tA:link { so-language: zxx } --><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">\u00a9<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"> Stevie Taylor 2010.
