Ain&#8217;t Over &#8216;Til The Fat Lady Sings."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I understand that the stores have you thinking fall has arrived.\u00a0 That summer is over and, minus the freakishly overzealous celebration of Halloween that will have us making otherwise socially unacceptable things like<a href=\"http:\/\/katherinemariephotography.com\/blog\/archives\/7242\" target=\"_blank\"> this<\/a>, the cold and dearth of winter is on the doorstep.\u00a0 That the approach of Labor Day signals not just a random holiday for which we are given the day off in order to recognize, um&#8230;., working (???), but the end of of the summer season.<\/p>\n<p>But here at Woodland Pond, we refuse to go out without a fight and like they say in the opera&#8212;-it ain&#8217;t over &#8217;til the fat lady sings.\u00a0 I cut back the tomatoes in the greenhouse from this&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5698\" 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shocking, I know.\u00a0 And if that wasn&#8217;t surprising enough, it turns out you can propagate tomatoes by just clipping off branches and putting them in a pot of dirt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5701\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/011-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/011-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/011-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had my doubts about this, although when I was cutting the plants back I noticed that the overflowing tomatoes&#8217; branches had started to root into the greenhouse floor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5702\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/006-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/006-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/006-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I took some clippings from the varieties in the garden and potted them up in the hopes of growing fresh plants to overwinter.\u00a0 As any gardener can attest, the way plants grow when<strong> <em>they<\/em><\/strong> want to grow and the way they grow when<em> <strong>you <\/strong><\/em>want them to grow are 2 entirely different things.\u00a0 Which means I was happy to discover fresh leaves&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/059.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5703\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/059-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/059-300x225.jpg 300w, (which I probably destroyed by pulling this transplant up to check on them) on my cuttings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/058.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5704\" title=\"058\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/058-300x225.jpg\" http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/058-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even the pepper plants that I rescued from the sheep and transplanted into the rotted straw bales in the greenhouse are showing new life.\u00a0 This means it only took 8 months for the straw bales I put into the greenhouse to rot sufficiently to plant in them.\u00a0 A little bit longer than the 4 weeks I read about when I started that project.\u00a0 Good thing we have more time than money around here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/055.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5706\" 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did have to plant the cucumbers from seeds as the ones in the garden had nothing green left to give.\u00a0 But they have already sprouted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/060.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With all that growing in the greenhouse we might make summer last all  the way into December.\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking you should all expect jars of  homemade salsa for Christmas.\u00a0 Which means my Christmas shopping for the  year is done.\u00a0 Take that, <a href=\"http:\/\/christmas.organizedhome.com\/christmas-countdown\" target=\"_blank\">crazy Christmas countdown lady<\/a>!\u00a0 Beat you to your preplanned festive sparkly Christmas punch!<\/p>\n<p>Of course the garden isn&#8217;t the only thing refusing to fade into fall.\u00a0 The swallowtails are still going strong.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/051-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5713\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/051-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/051-2-300x225.jpg 300w, of caterpillars on the dill.\u00a0 It remains to be seen if they will form chrysalises (chrysalli??) or hibernate for the winter.<\/p>\n<p><a 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, my favorite thing about the caterpillars is not that they eat up all my dill.\u00a0 It&#8217;s those frightening osmeterium that they extend when you touch them.\u00a0 It&#8217;s disgusting and intriguing all at the same time.\u00a0 We have to &#8220;pet&#8221; each caterpillar when we see them just to watch those things pop out so we can jump back and yell, &#8220;Eeeewww!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/0421.jpg\"><img it&#8217;s a little slow around here.\u00a0 You take your thrills where you can find them, people.<\/p>\n<p>We still have babies in the barn, too.\u00a0 Emmie hatched out 16 ducklings&#8212;quite a success for a late-in-the-season hatch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/0321.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" have much hope for the remaining half-hatched egg on the nest.\u00a0 Typically, ducklings that don&#8217;t hatch on their own don&#8217;t fare well if they&#8217;re rescued.\u00a0 Which didn&#8217;t stop Pretty from helping extricate the one left behind.\u00a0 The crook in her neck was a bad sign.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/0551.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5720\" 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pipping muscle on the back of the neck is what gives a duckling the strength to get out of the egg.\u00a0 And the straightening of that muscle signals the end to hatching and elicits a change in the leg movement of the duckling, enabling them to walk instead of the circuitous leg movement used in hatching.
