{"id":6650,"date":"2012-11-06T14:24:57","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T21:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/?p=6650"},"modified":"2012-11-13T06:09:36","modified_gmt":"2012-11-13T13:09:36","slug":"learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/?p=6650","title":{"rendered":"Learning."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, there has been a lot of learning going on over here.\u00a0 I took a basic knitting class where I learned, um, the basics.\u00a0 I made a visit to a knitting friend when I dropped a stitch.\u00a0 She showed me how to fix the dropped stitch and lots of other tricks that I barely understood at that time and couldn&#8217;t possibly repeat at home.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be back, K, I&#8217;ll be back.\u00a0 Plus, a frantic phone call to another knitting friend when I knotted my yarn, none of my co-workers could help me unravel the knot, and I didn&#8217;t know if I could cut and retie it or not.\u00a0 And lots of referencing my<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Chicks-Sticks-Guide-Knitting\/dp\/0823006751\" target=\"_blank\">Guide to Knitting<\/a><\/span> by The Chicks with Sticks, Nancy Queen &amp; Mary Ellen O&#8217;Connell, whenever I couldn&#8217;t remember what I had learned in class.\u00a0 Also, I learned lots of tolerance for lots of mistakes in my first piece.<\/p>\n<p>But I did it.<\/p>\n<p>I knitted a scarf.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6655\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/002-e1352211846721-300x246.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/002-e1352211846721-300x246.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/002-e1352211846721-1024x839.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Please note how it is artistically arrayed for your viewing pleasure.\u00a0 Also to hide all the holes, the randomly alternating knit and purl stitches from when I put my knitting down and forgot what I was doing, the differences in tension, and the curling edges.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to straighten the edges by putting a heavy plate on it overnight.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t work.\u00a0 Apparently, you should trim your scarf with a border stitch to stop that from happening in a project made with stockinette.\u00a0 I would have known that if I had read the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Guide to Knitting<\/span> all the way through before starting my project instead of reading it as I went along.\u00a0 Or if The Chicks with Sticks had put that &#8220;cheep&#8221; trick on page 41 instead of of page 42.\u00a0 &#8216;Cause 41 was the page I stopped at when I began knitting my first project.\u00a0 Hey, I knew how to knit and purl by that point, how was I supposed to know I needed to know something else?\u00a0 All that learning was exhausting.\u00a0 Besides, who was going to feed the sheep if I was doing all that reading?\u00a0 The sheep, people!\u00a0 No sheep, no wool, no knitting.\u00a0 I&#8217;m just sayin.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/095.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6657\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/095-e1352212304226-300x282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/095-e1352212304226-300x282.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/095-e1352212304226-1024x962.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the most important thing that I learned was something that the fashion industry has known for many years.\u00a0 Put that garment on a pretty model and it doesn&#8217;t matter how many times you failed to knit the last stitch, it looks darn good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6679\" src=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/007-e1352236876963-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/007-e1352236876963-198x300.jpg 198w, http:\/\/ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/007-e1352236876963-679x1024.jpg 679w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pretty said the curling edges made it curl around her neck just perfectly and she happily wore it off to school today.\u00a0 She thought the alternating stitches were stylish.\u00a0 And I don&#8217;t think she even noticed the holes.\u00a0 Or the knot knitted in about 3\/4 of the way through.\u00a0 God, I love that kid.\u00a0 She&#8217;s always been my favorite daughter.\u00a0 Also, my only daughter.\u00a0 Good thing I got it right the first time.\u00a0 Which is more than I can say for my knitting.<\/p>\n<p>But I refuse to give up.\u00a0 I am already starting my next scarf and I am trying a new stitch.\u00a0 I am using the Boyfriend Basket Weave Scarf pattern from my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Guide to Knitting<\/span>.\u00a0 The Other Half was a bit alarmed at this development.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You know me and the boys probably aren&#8217;t going to wear any scarves, right?\u00a0 I mean, you&#8217;re not making a bunch of scarves for us, right?\u00a0 You know men don&#8217;t wear scarves, right?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jeez.\u00a0 Clearly, the scarf is for my boyfriend, hence the title.\u00a0 Which is what The Other Half should really find alarming.\u00a0 Although he is unlikely to be threatened by a scarf-wearing boyfriend.\u00a0 Since, according to him, real men don&#8217;t wear scarves.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t worry,&#8221; I assured him.\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;m adapting the pattern by using a chunky, heathered yarn and saving it to give to my mom.\u00a0 &#8216;Cause real moms do wear scarves.\u00a0 Besides, I think I&#8217;m going to make you a cowl.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s a cowl?&#8221;\u00a0 he asked.<\/p>\n<p>I googled it for him and showed him the images.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Um, no.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not wearing that either, &#8221;
