Around here we refuse to celebrate Christmas early.\u00a0 Because we think Thanksgiving counts, too.\u00a0 And because my kids in year round school get 3 weeks off in December so if we start doing all the fun stuff in November then I am screwed<\/span> the kids are bored during break.<\/p>\n

So we take time for Thanksgiving.\u00a0 We hang the Thanksgiving wreaths.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We put out a cornucopia filled with leaves and pine cones and gourds from the garden.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Gourds that we switch out when they get moldy or rotten.\u00a0 Or when we notice the smell.\u00a0 Hey, pumpkin spice might mean Thanksgiving to you.\u00a0 For us, it’s the smell of rotting gourds.\u00a0 Because we’re authentic like that.<\/p>\n

The wall of thanks goes up. \u00a0 And the kids get busy jotting down all the things they are thankful for.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For the record so far, the dogs got 4 mentions each while The Other Half and I only got 1.\u00a0 By the only child smart enough to realize I can recognize all their handwriting.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We start planning Thanksgiving dinner around the greens growing in the garden.\u00a0 Like creamed spinach.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And collards.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Cooked in bacon fat, of course.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

While the weather is still nice, we get outside and celebrate fall activities.<\/p>\n

Like raking the leaves.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And raking the leaves.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And raking more leaves.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Interspersed with football games,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

fort building,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

and swinging in the woods.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Plus a visit to the local chestnut farm after the harvest is done.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For an historic home tour,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

a hay ride through the orchard,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

a bouncy house,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

smores,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

and, of course, chestnuts roasting over an open fire.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Wait a minute!!!<\/p>\n

Very tricky, Christmas.

Oh, yeah.\u00a0 And that begging-to-go-on-the-family-Christmas-card-perfect-photo in the orchard.<\/p>\n
