Ruffled Feathers and Spilled Milk

Farming with ducks and dairy goats, chickens and children.

Open Season.

You might realize summer is approaching when the hummingbirds arrive at the feeders.

Or when the broccoli and greens have to be harvested every day to keep them from bolting.

When the fighting begins over the first of the snap peas.  Oh, there are never enough snap peas!

When the baseball gear starts taking over the entire house.

When the brooder room fills up with chicks.

Because they had Polish chicks at the feed store and I only have 1 Polish hen.  Which just seems wrong.  Someone around here should have bigger hair problems than me.

Plus, some turkey poults.  Because I always wanted a pair of heritage breeding turkeys.  Even before I saw them for sale on craigslist.  At least I think I always wanted them.  Probably.  Maybe.

Maybe you know summer is around the corner when the temperatures are reaching 80 degrees and sheep shearing can’t be put off any longer.  If taking some hand clippers to the sheep by yourself can actually be called “shearing.”  Eh.

Guess who’s getting “sheared” next?

I know summer’s coming when the annual Mother’s Day fishing trip has come and gone.

Because who wants breakfast in bed when you can have breakfast on the pier.

Summer’s really close when we’re celebrating the Middle’s birthday.

But most of all, we know summer is almost here when it’s strawberry season.

Yep, the fields are open!

And the berries are waiting.

You’ll be sure to run into family and friends while picking in the rows.  Everybody’s doing it!

Every year we welcome the first sweet heat of summer along with the sweet taste of fresh berries.

Because sometimes no matter how much things change….

they still stay the same.

Next up, blueberries.

Except this time someone’s carrying me in the back pack.  Right, kids.  Kids?  Kids???
